Cancer
Diana has a special interest in cancer and when she was in nursing in Canada she was nominated as Miss Hope for her nursing college to represent the Ontario Cancer Campaign. She believes that there are many things that can be done to help prevent cancer but is a strong believer that guilt is the least thing you need if, despite your best efforts, cancer is and remains a part of your life. One in three of us will have some form of cancer in our lives and most if not all of us will be affected by cancer - through loved ones and friends, colleagues etc. She has trained as a facilitator to the "You Can Heal Your Life" programme as devised by Louise Hay and now runs the workshops, has attended lectures, workshops and training on the subject of cancer (please see her CV for details) and now offers personal support and guidance to individuals affected by cancer. Her aim is to take the stigma and taboo away from talking about cancer and to get it out in the open so that there is less fear through misunderstanding and isolation. Ignorance is not bliss in her mind. She has a good collection of supportive books on the subject of cancer which she is happy to lend to clients. In addition to her private therapy sessions and consultation work, Diana is on the NHS Register as one of the few practitioners in the country qualified for the Hypno-Chemo Programme which is aimed at alleviating the distressing physical and psychological issues which can present during chemotherapy. She also trained with the renowned Bristol Cancer Help Centre and also is one of the few in the country who has trained in offering hypnotherapy and CBT support to clients with cancer who are being treated with chemotherapy. This training was done through the Rossendale Hospice Centre and Integrated Healthcare. She has also been asked to be with individuals who have wanted her there in their final hours for support and friendship. The woman who inspired her to work with the terminally ill (of which many cancer patients are not) was someone she studied in her nursing days Dr Elizabeth Kubler Ross and her excellent ground breaking book back in the late 60's On Death and Dying.
Diana offers a variety of supportive treatments for clients with cancer that help alleviate fear, depression, minimise pain and nausea and generally allow the individual to regain some control in their life. The treatments include CBT, counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, creative visualisation, positive body imagery, anger management, stress management and NLP.
Below you will find facts about cancer that may be beneficial to you.
Cancer: The facts from the BBC | One in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer during our life. The disease tends to affect older people - but can strike at any time.
Excluding certain skin cancers, there were more than 270,000 new cases of the disease in 2001 - and the rate is increasing by about 1% a year.
Some cancer, such as breast, are becoming more common, while new cases of lung cancer fall away due to the drop in the number of smokers.
However, while the overall number of new cancers is not falling, the good news is that successful treatment rates for many of the most common types are improving rapidly.
BBC News Online has produced, in conjunction with Cancer Research UK, a guide to some of the most common forms of cancer and the treatments used to tackle them.
